Animation history
animation has been used for century's even dating back so far to 2000BC where they would draw pictures on the walls to show a story.
since then animation has evolved into something much more advanced for example now it has become more realistic and it has revolutionised our entertainment.
the bird in the cage is one of the most famous early forms of animation. Although it was basic it was very impressive and original for its time. It was a very popular toy amongst children and was the next stage in the evolutionary chain in animation. After that it was the flip book a still common used form of animation but not used as much as it would have been in those days. The flip book was more advanced than the bird in the cage because it showed longer animation and it was a more in depth.
a century later the Phenakistoscope was made. this was a step towards the animation that we are used to today. then in 1906 American film producer J. Stuart Blackton used chalk animation in what has been named as the world's first cartoon "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces". after that in 1928 Walt Disney synchronized both sound and cartoon to create "Steamboat Willie" this was also the first cartoon to feature Mickey Mouse with sound even though it was his third including the ones when he didn't have sound.
9 years later Disney made Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the first ever colour animated film. people suspected the film to be a flop because of the current war, fortunately it was a huge a success. following the acclaim of Snow White and the seven dwarfs Disney made 2 new films which were Pinocchio and Fantasia. sadly both of the films were flops due to the imagery being relative to the current war.
in 1953 Warner Brothers. Cartoons created the animated short Duck Amuck which portrays Daffy Duck to the subject of torment when the animator is continuously mocking him and trying to annoy him, at the end of the short Daffy finally loses it and the camera zooms out to show that Bugs Bunny was the animator. the film was very different form traditional cartoons, for example the use of breaking the fourth wall (Daffy arguing with the animator) and the constant change of location and physical appearance of Daffy.
later on in the 1980s they tried to make animation more appealing to teenagers and young adults with such films as The Flight of Dragons and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. most of these films have become quite cult but the one film that has become a stand out classic was Who Framed Roger Rabbit? which was released in 1988 , this was a groundbreaking blend of animation and live action. the film went on to win 3 Academy Awards. also during the same year was the debut of The Simpsons short segments on The Tracy Ullman Show, The Simpsons went on to become one of the the biggest and most successful cartoon/TV shows of all time.
1989 saw the debut of Wallace and Gromit in Nick Park's A Grand Day Out. This was one of the first major forms of media to have claymation in and there fore a landmark in animation history.
in 1995 the film Toy Story was released. this film revolutionised the animation world since it was the first feature length film to use CGI in its entirety. it has now become one of the biggest cartoons since Steamboat Willie.
